Even the best acne treatments will not work over the long term. They may be fine for quickly clearing up an outbreak, but the acne will inevitably return. Why? Because acne is a whole body condition and not just a skin disorder.

To understand why treatments are of temporary value only, we need to understand what really causes acne. Most acne is triggered by hormones secreted by the adrenal glands at the time of puberty. These hormonal changes cause the oil or sebaceous glands to produce extra oil or sebum. This mixes with dust and dead skin cells to form a plug which clogs the pores leading to pimples or comedones.

Closed comedones are known as whiteheads and open ones are known as blackheads. These can become infected and inflamed leading to pimples, cysts and nodules when combined with the normal bacteria that lives on our skin. Squeezing blackheads can also lead to inflammation and infection so it’s important to keep you hands off if possible!

Common areas affected by acne are the face, chest, upper back and shoulders as these contain the greatest number of sebaceous glands. However it is the acne that affects the face which causes the most misery, especially among teenagers. Some young people feel awkward in social situations thinking that everyone is looking at them and although that probably isn’t true, it can seriously undermine their confidence.

Acne is not restricted to teenagers, however, it can happen at any age. Adult acne may also be brought on by hormonal changes that occur at pregnancy or menopause. It also requires a whole body or holistic approach.

Acne scars can be the result of serious acne and remain even when the acne has healed. People think there is nothing they can do about scarring without resorting to expensive treatments such as an acne scar laser treatment or micro-dermabrasion, however mild acne scarring can be eliminated without resorting to these types of treatments.

Can we still use acne treatments? Yes of course but please don’t use an over the counter acne treatment like those currently sold in pharmacies. These are harsh on the skin and may actually make the condition worse. They also cost a lot of money, especially when you have to keep buying them again and again, or buying new ones because the old ones don’t work any more! Using these products or even prescription acne medications are not recommended at all during pregnancy.

What are the best treatments of acne that work and are safe to use? Natural acne treatments, while still having only a temporary effect, can safely soothe your skin and heal your acne while your other lifestyle changes are taking effect.

How to get rid of acne without treatment? The very best way is a holistic approach that takes into account our diet and lifestyle, as well as the way we handle our skin care regime. While this may sound as if it will take forever, it can actually work quite quickly, but you need to know how to go about it. You can have smooth beautiful acne free skin sooner than you think.
