When we enter the age of our teenage years it is that stage of our lives where we experience the most dramatic changes to our physical bodies, our social behavior and many other aspects. The reason for this is called puberty. It is closely followed by another important stage known as adolescence. There are many physical changes that will occur during these two stages of life. One of the most dreaded physical changes that will happen to some of these young people is the development of the condition of acne.

It is actually only a myth to think that teenagers are the only ones who experience acne, as it is possible to suffer from acne at just about any age or gender but it is however, most prevalent amongst teens. This is because they are more prone to developing acne from the drastic changes that are happening to them physically and involve many hormones and bodily systems. These changes happening externally are all from processes happening inside of the body and sometimes if too many hormones are being created, it can lead to breakouts.

So what exactly causes acne then?

Acne is said to be caused by a certain type of bacteria. It occurs when the pores of our skin become clogged up from the oils that are produced in the glands of our skin. The bacteria thrive in these clogged pores causing irritation and redness. The extra hormones from puberty are responsible for creating too much of this skin oil.

As most of us are aware of, younger people tend to not be very hygienic and caring for the face and diet is often neglected. Because of this, acne occurs much faster and often becomes much worse than it should be. During puberty, the teens will experience a lot of hormonal change, one being an overproduction of sebum in the face and other parts of the body and when they are not cared for, skin disorders such as acne can occur. Acne is only one of the potential cases.

Acne is a major skin problem all over the world. There are remedies and treatments available though. There are simple herbal mixtures all the way down to the strong prescription medications. Seeking the help of a skin specialist or dermatologist is usually the first step you should take as they can recommend certain treatments over others depending on your skin type and severity.

If you are a teen, it is a good idea to go and as your parents to help you out too. They may have had acne when they were younger and can give you some helpful skincare and treatment tips that worked for them. Remember that good hygiene and diet are important for the health of your body and skin and thats where you should ultimately start.

Whatever the roots of your acne may be, see to it that you take good care of your skin and be gentle with the areas infected with acne so as not to aggravate it. Dont be discouraged if a treatment doesnt work for you because no one remedy out there will work for everyone.br

Clearing Out Acne With The Best Treatment

Embarrassed and bothered no end by acne? Thats unfortunate! But youre certainly not alone with this predicament. It is estimated that about eighty percent of teenagers suffer from the unsightly presence of acne, even if these are mere pimples. And of those who have acne, about twenty percent is afflicted with the more harsh forms which leave an even more embarrassing trace we know as scar.

Acne is an inflammatory disease. Its ugliness is difficult to conceal as it usually affects the skin of the face, neck, and shoulders. Often it becomes manifest during a persons early teen years and persists into his or her twenties. In a show of surrender, some people with acne accept their suffering as being a natural consequence of getting out of the childhood years. Still, it is important that people understand what really causes acne.

During the transition period from childhood to adolescence, sex hormones are produced by the glands. As these hormones circulate through the body tissues, they arouse the oil glands to greater activity. (These oil glands – scientifically termed sebaceous glands – are associated with the hair vesicles of the skin.) And as the cells within these oil glands increase in number at such a rapid pace, they cause the glands outlets to be obstructed. The glands proceed with their activity though their secretion cant reach the external layer of the skin anymore. As this happens, white specks (which we call whiteheads) are produced by the bulging of the tiny glands which stretch the surrounding tissues. The deeply-entrenched secretion then goes through a process of chemical change, making it appear black (what we know as blackhead). Stretching some more, the sebaceous glands and the hair vesicles break, causing inflammation on the affected area. Small solid, conical elevations (papules) develop next, followed by pustules (more commonly known as pimples). Under a more harsh condition, microorganisms penetrate the skin as the delicate tissues are shattered, resulting to infections.

Promoting ones overall health so as to be more resistant to all sorts of disorder is a necessary primary step in treating acne. A treatment program usually involves the following series of actions: Cleansing the affected parts, at least twice a day, with warm water and non-medicated soap; refraining from using cosmetics for the entire treatment period; getting sufficient rest (this is when an eight-hour-a-night sleep is very important); having a well-balanced diet; and avoiding the use of drugs or medications that are not prescribed by a physician.

Whats more important for people to know is that there is a scientifically-proven natural way that can cure acne permanently – something that acne sufferers are certainly looking for./pbr

Coping With the Effects of Acne

As anyone with acne knows, there are many psychological and emotional effects of the condition. These are the emotional scars and effects that cant be treated with a quick home remedy or cream and its something that no dermatologist or doctor can really help you with either. According to all the studies, acne is most prevalent amongst teenagers. This is also when it becomes hardest to deal with the problem socially. The acne itself is usually accompanied by feelings of depression, self-pity and shame. For most teenagers, a supportive parent is usually the greatest help. Actually, There are many things you can do to help and we will look into a few of these options.

Remind the teenager or your child that their condition is only temporary.

As an adult, you have to remember to give encouragement to the child. If they tend to become down because of their acne, you will see this. Tell them that the acne will not last for that long and it will very quickly pass. Always remind them to move on from any reactions from others that may be negative as they are unimportant.

See a good dermatologist or doctor.

The moment your teens acne becomes a problem or becomes significant, you should go and see a good dermatologist. Of course, the earlier you see one the better. Always go with your teen or child when they have their appointments for support and to help with any decisions they might need to take about possible treatments or medications. Although seeing a dermatologist may be a little hard for a young teen, remind them that in the long-run, they can most probably always help to reduce the severity of their acne condition and show you the correct way to look after your skin as many teens tend to over wash or actually do more damage to their skin leaving horrible scars and marks behind.

Remind the teen of good habits to maintain.

There are many things that are known to make acne worse in some people. As much of the problem of acne is internal, their diet can play a major role in the health of their skin. Research what foods are known to aggravate acne and teach your teen about why they should stay away from those foods. Explain to them the causes and effects of any problems and always be ready to answer any of their questions.

Help to boost your teens self-esteem and confidence.

The confidence of your child can plunge down dramatically if they are surrounded by people who tease and mock. This could also make your teen feel bitter inside. Always say positive things to your teen to boost their self-esteem. Try to be generous with your praises and point out anything good that the teen does. Look for any kinds of skills or talents that your teen has developed. This will help to keep their self-worth in check and strengthen their morale.

As the parent, you can always help out your or another teen through any misjudgments that are made by some in society against people who have acne. The good thing to know is that it is only a stage and will shortly come to and end. Be there for your child and support them completely like no one else can.br

Acne And Its Psychological Consequences – The Emotional Damage

Category: Health & Fitness @ 6:03 am

It’s common knowledge that acne, even in mild cases, can cause permanent facial scaring which is unfortunate. But did you know that acne can exact and even heavier emotional toll? Psychological scarring and social disabling among acne sufferers, both teenagers and adults, actually can have far more serious long term consequences than the physical fallout.

By some estimates, around 85% of people between the ages of 12 and 25 develop acne. The psychological and social impacts during this emotionally sensitive time of life are huge. Adolescents are in the throes of developing their personalities just when acne manifests itself. During this time, peer acceptance is critical, and peer status becomes inextricably woven with physical appearance and attractiveness, often leading to severe emotional disturbance when acne erupts.

Studies indicate that psychological consequences from acne primarily take the form of embarrassment, impaired self-image, low self-esteem, self-consciousness, frustration, and anger. There is a subset, as also shown in studies, where the sufferer believes that their personality has been adversely and permanently affected. Depression, to some degree, haunts younger people with acne to a greater extent than in the normal population. However, there is no clear indication that their depression in relation to acne is generally severe enough to require treatment. Most teens studied were far more likely to describe their mental state in terms of embarrassment, self consciousness, impaired self esteem and the like. Adults with acne, however, are more prone to suffer anxiety and depression needing treatment.

Acne flare-ups trigger these negative feelings as soon as they appear, and are aggravated in the teenage setting by taunting, stigmatizing, and apprehensions of being scrutinized and judged. Simply walking past a mirror can bring on feelings of self loathing. Some people report that their emotional reactions are at their worst when looking in the mirror.

Feeding acne’s emotional fallout are media generated ideal images of unblemished skin. People with acne become acutely aware that they have failed to live up to the ideal of perfect, flawless skin projected in television, film and advertising. Magazines targeting the younger female demographic certainly never portray anyone with pimples, nor, for that matter, will you encounter such images in publications for more mature audiences. One’s sexual attractiveness, so seemingly vital in the teenage years, is then found to be abysmal by comparison.

Of course, there’s a something of a paradox at work here. One of the acne myths is that stress in one’s life causes acne. Studies have proven that this is untrue, and, in fact, it’s the other way around. Acne can cause stress which, in turn, suggests that it was stress that caused the acne in the first place.

So, what are the remedies? First and foremost, of course, is treatment to relieve the symptoms of acne outbreaks as soon as they appear. Given the nature of the disease, there are numerous approaches to treatment (accompanied by information overload). A proactive stance toward treatment is the most effective way to ameliorate the damaging feelings. Beyond that, support and sensitivity on the part of one’s family and close friends goes a long way toward propping up both teenagers and adults while treatment is in progress.

7Acne Myths Exposed.

People are always willing to give you advice regarding your acne. The problem is that most of the advice they give are myths that they’ve picked up over the years.

However, skin experts are actually dismissing those as nothing but myths. The best way to cope with your acne problem is to educate yourself and it is with this purpose that we decided to list here the common acne myths that people often encounter.

1.You can outgrow your acne. This might be true in some cases but at least 25% of teenagers who have acne carry it into their adult lives. And more and more woman in their 20’s to late 40’s are reporting having acne for the first time. It is much more sensible to treat your acne immediately to avoid emotional stress and permanent scarring.

2.Bad eating habits causes pimples. The common myth is that chocolate, caffeine or oily foods will lead to or worsen an acne condition. In a large clinical research study no links were established between acne and food. However, some people feel that certain food can cause an acne outbreak. If this is your case try avoiding these foods for 2 to 4 weeks and monitor your acne. If your acne improves, do a test and try eating these foods to see if it will indeed cause an outbreak.

3.The sun will clear up acne. While tanning will dry up existing acne and help cover blemishes. It does not prevent acne from resurfacing. The dry skin will make the oil glands produce more oils and block your pores creating pimples and blackheads. Not to mention the risk of skin cancer and premature wrinkles.

4.Sex causes acne. No, the hormonal changes your body goes thru during puberty that lead to the maturation of your sexual features may cause acne. Sexual activity does not cause acne.

5.Drinking water will flush out acne. While drinking 6 to 8 glasses of water a day is recommended for a healthy body. Water alone will not cure acne. It will however, keep your skin healthy which will help in the fight against acne.

6.Stressed out = breakouts. Very high levels of stress may produces hormones that can cause acne. But normal levels of stress we encounter everyday will not produce an outbreak.

7.Poor hygiene causes acne. People believe that acne is caused by uncleanliness and they tend to over-wash or scrub their face. Over-washing and scrubbing too aggressively can damage the skin by stripping it of natural lipides. The oil gland will then produce more oils causing acne outbreaks. Using alcohol to wash your face will produce the same results. Washing 2 times daily with a salicylic acid(2%) based face wash will help treat your acne.

So the next time someone tells you one of those things, gracefully thank them for the advice and correct them and share what you know. Remember, knowledge is power.

Be Proactive With Acne Treatment

At some point in life, most people deal with acne. It is one of life’s most annoying realities that doesn’t seem to be a respector of persons. As a dermatologist, I am constantly meeting with teenagers, young adults and adults that are tired of struggling with acne and that are desperate for acne treatment that works.

Effective and healthy acne treatment is my life’s work and my passion. I love researching about the causes of acne and about all of the possible methods for helping the skin clear from acne. If you’ve ever been to a store looking for an acne treatment, then you know first hand how many options there are and how easy it would be to make the wrong choices.

Most teens and adults I know go looking for the easiest and cheapest form of acne treatment that they can find. Yes, acne bothers them, but not enough to seek professional treatment. I am convinced that one of the reasons that so many people are unhappy with their chosen method of acne treatment is that they haven’t taken the time to make changes to their lifestyle.

I am a firm believer that the most effective acne treatment is one that requires a total change of lifestyle. When any client struggling with acne enters my office, my first assignemnt to them is to change some of their lifestyle habits for a month and then return to see me. I will not prescribe any topical or oral acne treatment until people have other daily habits under control. For example, I look carefully at the typical diet of my patients and I look for ways to help them cut out junk food. I ask them to drink more water and less beverages that are filled with sugar, and I encourage them to stay away from sugary and salty foods for the month. I monitor their fitness habits and suggest that they get moving.

This might seem like a strange method of acne treatment, but you would be shocked to learn that every single client of mine returns to my office after a month of changing their lifestyle in awe of what a difference changing habits has made for them. Yes, I do offer topical and or oral acne treatments to supplement their other methods, but the point is that no topical or oral acne treatment will be as effective without partnering it with a healthy lifestyle.

Acne Treatments For Teenagers

Finding the right acne treatments for teenagers can be very difficult. More than eight-five percent of teenagers suffer from acne on a worldwide basis. As a result, surveys show that teen girls and boys spend more time and money on various methods of treatment and acne products than any other demographic of society. It is difficult to be a teenager anyway, but when you throw in serious acne problems and the teasing that can accompany them, teenagers feel as if they have to do something right away. They’re not all together wrong, either. Serious acne can lead to facial scarring that will have a poor effect on self-esteem that will last a lifetime. There are a number of different effective acne treatments for teenagers.

One of the best acne treatments for teenagers that has just received clearance from the Food and Drug Administration is light therapy. This treatment will have to be performed in a dermatologists office over the course of a few weeks or months depending on the severity of the acne. Using light pulses, the bacteria that causes acne is destroyed, leaving only clear skin behind. The process is painless and has virtually no side effects. It does not involve any downtime, and it is your ticket to clear skin in a hurry. Consult your doctor or dermatologist for more information on this procedure.

Another good acne treatment for teenagers is a topical antibiotic. These usually come in a cream form that must be rubbed on the face once or twice a day. While they do destroy the bacteria that can cause acne, they can also leave behind some side effects like dry, peeling skin.

There are several good acne treatments for teenagers, but before you decide on one, even one that is over-the-counter, it is a good idea to consult your doctor.
