Don’t Be Afraid Of Dermatology

Many people I know are afraid to make regular visits to their physicians. For some reason, they have learned to be fearful of visiting a doctor and of what the visit might mean for them. I am increasingly grateful that my parents taught me to understand that going to a doctor is a privilege that not everyone in the world gets. As I have been raising my own five children, I have tried to help them understand as well that visiting a doctor of any kind is a privilege that should not be taken lightly. I have recently begun sharing with my kids the privilege of utilizing the physicians who specialize in dermatology.

Dermatology is one field of medicine that you should never be afraid of. Why? Because the goal of dermatology is simply to make you look better, literally. Dermatology has everything to do with the health and life of your skin. It is a complete privilege that we get to have doctors who are totally devoted to helping us improve the condition of our skin.

I have recently begun taking my three teenagers to see a doctor who specializes in dermatology and more particulary in teen skin care. My teens are all struggling with acne and are hoping that dermatology can be at least part of the answer. What I appreciate about dermatology as a field is that the physicians more often than not realize that skin problems are related to a lot more than just a chemical imbalance. Dermatology often suggests, for example, that teens and young adults need to make adjustments to their diet and fitness habits if they really want to see changes come to their skin.

One of the great things that dermatology has done for our family is teach us all the importance of drinking water. I never realized what a huge role that water played in clearing skin and in keeping skin looking vibrant and healthy. Since we have been using dermatology often, we have noticed a strong difference in all of our skin.

If you have questions about your skin or about problems you are having with your skin then look no further than to dermatology. See what a dermatologist can do for you. Get advice about good dermatologists from friends or family members and schedule and appointment for everyone in your family today. Dermatology is concerned with everything related to skin, not just with acne problems. You can get screened for skin cancer and learn how to take better care of your appearance.

Nutrition in Relation to Our Skin

Category: Health & Fitness @ 5:58 am

Author: Michael Russell
Source: articleage.com

It’s the thing that keeps our insides in. It’s the display window for much of what’s happening inside of us. It’s the largest organ of our body. It is our skin. It is also the organ that is most susceptible to damage from the elements, the sun and wind and cold and from environmental pollution, germs and poisons. Many symptoms of illness and disease are evidenced by the condition of our skin, such as measles and chicken pox. Pale or flushed skin tone shows that something inside is not right. Now, because it plays such an important role, it needs to be well cared for and nutrition has an important part to play in caring for our skin.
Nutrition is vital not only for caring for our skin, but also for its development, right from the innermost layer, the dermis. It [the dermis] consists mainly of elastin and collagen. At that stage, vitamin C is the nutrient that causes the manufacture of collagen. Over time, the collagen and elastin fibers become less flexible due to damage by free radicals. Antioxidants such as vitamins A, C, E and others help to reduce that damage.
Let’s look now at a few common skin conditions and find out some of the nutrients that will effectively prevent or reduce those conditions.
Dry or rough skin.
Rough, dry skin can be prevented by vitamin A, both as part of your diet and also by using a skin cream that is rich in vitamin A on susceptible areas of your skin. Essential fats make up the membranes of our skin cells and a lack of these essential fatty acids is another cause of dry skin. We need to keep our skin well oiled from the inside by eating foods that contain these essential fatty acids, such as fish, nuts and seeds, especially flax seeds. Vital in maintaining healthy, supple skin, is our water intake. We need an average of 1.5 liters per day of good clean water. This is not only beneficial for the condition of our skin, but also for many other aspects of a healthy body.
Acne. (The teenager’s nightmare)
Acne is caused by several conditions. Excess fat blocks the skin pores. A deficiency of Vitamin A causes skin cells to be over-gelatinized, bringing about a congestion of the skin. It also brings about a lowered ability to fight infection. The solution is to eat foods that are low in fats and sugar. Drink plenty of water. Eat a lot of fresh fruit and vegetables. The supplements to add to your diet are Vitamin A, Zinc, Vitamin C, Vitamin E and Niacin.
Eczema.
This could be caused by an allergic reaction to some foods, especially dairy products or wheat, combined with a lack of essential fatty acids. Combat eczema by a diet low in saturated fat, but with a higher content of essential fats from seeds and their cold pressed oils. These are strong anti-inflammatory agents. Cut down on meat and dairy products. Replace meat with fish. Increase vegetable intake. Supplement with essential oils like flax, evening primrose and borage oil. Add Vitamins B6, biotin zinc, magnesium as well as the antioxidant vitamins A, C and E.
Just looking at these few common conditions shows that good nutrition plays an important part in caring for your skin. So, to sum up, eat a lot of fresh fruit and vegetables. If possible, stick to the organically grown types. Each day, try to eat nuts, seeds or their cold pressed oils. Last but not least, pure water is vital. Drink about 1.5 liters each day.
To quote the words from a local skin care product advertisement, “Love the Skin You’re In”.

Healthy Skin

The skin is the largest organ in the body. Because it is an organ, it needs to be treated well. If it isn’t, it will become sick or will become hurt. What is amazing is that the skin is the surface that is most abused and least taken care of. Many people even eat right and exercise daily without ever thinking of their skin. Doesn’t seem right does it? It is when we age that we think our skin looks wrinkled or frail. Age spots make us think twice about the things we do and the products we use. But, having healthy skin starts long before we are old. It starts when we are young.
All parents need to teach their child the proper way to treat their skin. From head to toe we need to thoroughly clean it and protect it from the beginnings of life. Harsh soaps can lead to damaged or dry skin even when we are young. Parents should provide a daily regimen for their child to follow which includes bathing, washing of the face, and treating cuts, scrapes or other wounds.
In the teenage years, skin becomes the enemy for many teens. Because of the increased hormone activity in the body, skin can develop acne. No teenager wants to be seen with that, but unfortunately, it is not always a choice. Acne severity has been linked to genetics as well as unhealthy treatment of the skin. There are medications that can help lessen the effects it has though.
As we age, we need to continue to properly take care of the skin. There are many products on the market that claim to provide healthy skin treatments. Sometimes they work others they do not. It is true, in fact, that eating a balanced diet that is full of antioxidant rich foods can reduce wrinkles and dry skin. Just eating right can help you avoid those overpriced products.
To maintain healthy skin, people need to treat it properly and protect it. For this reason, we have saved the most important feature for last. It is essential that any amount of exposure to sun be done only with the use of sun screen. The suns harmful rays can cause cancer with just a slight amount of exposure. You do not need to burn for this to happen either. You may never even realize it in fact.
To have healthy skin, you just need to follow a healthy diet and maintain proper cleansing habits. Then, you and your skin can be at peace with each other!

Acne Solutions: Is Smoking And Alcohol Consumption Aggravating Your Acne

Category: Uncategorized @ 6:03 am

Author: MICHELLE CONLIFFEbr
Source: isnare.combr
br
Acne medicine need not come in a bottle, you see, for most of us smoking is associated with lung cancer, however research has shown that this casual habit also has negative impacts on our skin. While the sun and other chemicals that we ingest or put on our bodies are the core leaders in the ageing process, it is thought that tobacco is also a major contributor to the rate at to which we age. Ten (10) years of smoking is all it takes for you to look and quite possibly feel Ten (10) years older than you really are. You might say, but 10 years is a long time, well not if you start smoking when youre 18. If we crunch some numbers a teenager who starts smoking at 18 years of age will there fore look like 38 at age 28.

So what is your little casual recreation doing to your body, well, smoking causes the narrowing of blood vessels in the body. This includes those vessels that supply the outermost layer of the skin with oxygen and nutrients. The skin thus receives reduced quantities of vital oxygen and nutrients, such as Vitamin A (the acne nutrient). Alcohol on the other reduces your skin effectiveness in being the first line of defense against bacterial infections. If you are prone to acne, theses are two effects that you could do without.

Vitamin A is used by the body to help generate new cells and replace old ones. This vitamin also boosts the production of collagen and can thus lead to more youthful looking skin. In the long term, a lack of oxygen and nutrients causes the formation of harmful free radicals that slowly damage the elastic fibers and collagen, which keeps the skin strong flexible and young looking. The net result is, the premature signs of aging, in the form of wrinkles.

According to reports published in the British Journal of Dermatology female smokers may be much more likely to develop non-inflammatory acne (NIA) than women who dont smoke. They looked at more than 1000 women and found that 40% of those who smoked had acne in the form of blocked pores, large white heads and small cysts, all of which are characteristic of NIA. Also they found that the smokers had half the levels of skin secretions of vitamin E, the nutrient that reduces the tendency to be acne prone.
It can also be postulated that the act of smoking, that is the repeated pressing of the lips on the cigarette, the heat build up around the mouth, drastically causes wrinkles and damaged skin in this region, sad to say our smile region.

In the final analysis while you may enjoy you after lunch smoke, and your evening vodka, these activities in the long term will age not only your skin but also your entire body. We all want to look youthful for as long as we possibly can, so drink water when you are thirsty and take a nap to relax, simple pleasures may just cost us too much. And by the way some acne solutions are free.br

Acne Treatment And Smoking

Category: Uncategorized @ 6:00 am

All of us have ideas about acne and the factors that affect acne treatment. Smoking is one such factor. Does smoking reduce the chances of quick cure? Many trials have been conducted to find out about the effect of smoking on acne formation and acne treatment. Till now no specific results have been found out. It is a known fact that smoking reduces the healing rate. So you can be sure that if you have acne that is ulcerating or is infected, it may take longer in getting healed. Smoking also makes skin age faster. Smoking may not cause acne, but to treat acne faster, it is better to drop smoking. Smoking affects all the vital organs of the body and it is better avoided. How about sunlight?

Acne and Sunlight

Many teenagers believe that sunlight reduces the acne. It may be possible that the rays of the sun may be reducing the population of the bacteria P.acnes. But this has not been established scientifically as yet.

Sunrays can prove to be dangerous to the skin. Sunrays age the skin very fast. Wrinkles, blotches, sunspots, etc all form because of sunrays. The sunrays also cause skin cancer.

Most of the acne medications make the skin sensitive to sun. If you are using some of these medications such as retinoids, your probability of getting sunburn increases. It is better to protect yourself from the sun. What about supplements?

Acne and supplements

Can supplements cause acne? People take variety of supplements to gain weight, muscles and for other purposes. Most of them are protein powders. Supplements are enriched foods. No relation has been established between supplements and acne. Unless you are taking hormones your chances of getting acne are very poor. However if you feel that a particular supplement is causing acne, please stop taking that.

Exposing the Truth about Tanning and the Worlds Most Common Cancer

Category: Uncategorized @ 6:09 am

Author: Danielle M. Whitebr
Source: articleage.combr
br
It is official. Spring has sprung, bringing along with it spring fever. I can see it in my students eyes. They are practically breaking out in hives itching to soak up the warm spring sun, despite the fact they are sitting in a class that discusses skin cancer prevention.

Alas, despite their instructors desperate pleadings, these 20-something-year-old college students find it difficult, if not arduous, to forego their so-called need to tan that Hollywood constantly feeds and propagates. And while it is quite simply impossible for anyone to get a safe tan from tanning beds and other forms of ultraviolet radiation, there are several high-quality sunless tanning mousses that not only achieve that coveted bronze look, naturally, but also provide essential sun protection. Now my students, even my pageant girls, can have the best of both worlds.

They no longer have to walk into class with guilt-ridden faces knowing they have completely disregarded the very real dangers associated with using tanning beds. They are happy and healthy. And that makes me, the now dubbed skin cancer crusader happy, too.

Yet, despite the fact I am slowly replacing their love for tanning with a safe alternative—that of sunless tanning foams such as those developed and manufactured by Neostrata (which garnered the prestigious Gold Triangle Award from the American Academy of Dermatology in 2005), there remains a deeply pressing concern; a lingering question. How do we educators and advocates effectively tackle the culture of tanning, and thus significantly reduce the alarming increase in skin cancer incidence and mortality as a result of frequenting tanning salons?

Contrary to popular belief, the bottom-line is that there is no such thing as a safe tan. Any tan is damage to your skin. And that is a fact. The Indoor Tanning Association (ITA) would have the consumer-driven pop culture hold to the myth that tanning beds are safe, and are even a viable way of treating a variety of skin issues such as acne, or even Seasonal Affective Disorder. Such claims are false, even irresponsible and potentially deadly, and credible scientific research proves it. There is no way to achieve a safe, healthy tan from tanning beds or other sources of ultraviolet radiation.

Consider the following case-and-point.

The American Academy of Dermatology, in conjunction with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently conducted a lengthy and independent research study which sheds some light on this issue, thus proving valuable insight into a media-inundated industry wrought with misleading, confusing, and even erroneous claims about tanning. They discovered, through numerous surveys, that more than 61% of women 18 and older (and 69% of men) equate a tan with beauty and health (www.aad.org/aad/Newsroom).

Despite the fact that we know that there is no such thing as a safe tan, people still associate bronzed skin with beauty and health, said Dr. Darrel S. Rigel, clinical professor at New York University Medical Center. Whats even more surprising is that the survey showed that 62 % of men and women responded that they know someone who has or had skin cancer, which – depending on its location and severity – does nothing to improve your looks and can be very detrimental to your health.

Dr. Elizabeth Whitmore, who, like Dr. Rigel, is a member of the AAD, agrees. People continue to invest both time and money into visiting tanning salons despite evidence which have found an increased incidence of melanoma—the deadliest form of skin cancer— in those who visit indoor tanning salons. Joyce Ayoub, director of public information at the Skin Cancer Foundation further attests to this fact. There is a myth that people like to believe, but it is a myth; not fact. Any tan means damage to the skin.

Further illustrating this point is a study headed by a team of scientists and researchers at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. These researchers discovered that the use of tanning beds and artificial tanning light sources—even just once, can, indeed, lead to molecular changes in the skin that may lead to cancer. In comparing the effects of a teenager who was exposed for the first dose of tanning beds to multiple doses […] it is evident that there is damage sustained to the molecular structure of the skin even having only been exposed once, Whitmore says.

The researchers at Johns Hopkins, who conducted the study of 10 teenagers who were exposed to full-body tanning beds over a period of two weeks which, she says was similar to the routine a teenager preparing for prom or for a tropical vacation would undertake. The researched found that the subjects skin and blood, (which was carefully analyzed both prior to the UV exposure and after the exposure) had two distinct markers that indicated molecular change.

Whitmore adds, Its another indication that there is biologic activity and that there is cell damage when the skin is exposed to UV rays. This repair process can eventually fail to do its job completely or correctly causing the cells to replicate abnormally [...] this breakdown in the normal functioning of cells can lead to malignant cancer.

In actual fact, the AAD asserts that nearly 90% of skin carcinomas are a result of over-exposure to UV rays. Thusly, The Cancer Crusaders Organization (www.cancercrusaders.org) randomly surveyed college-aged students (18-to-25), and found that nearly 100% reported to having used a tanning bed at least once in their lifetime.

After having been apprised of the risks and dangers associated with tanning, many were undeterred. Not only does tanning help my acne, it helps me a lot during this time of year when theres a great deal of pressure with upcoming finals and during the stresses of the holidays, says Amanda Gusciano, a senior Brigham Young University. Even though, I am aware of the dangers of tanning, there is still that temptation; I havent stopped using tanning beds and I never use sunscreens.

The significance protecting your skin from the harmful affects of UV-B and UV-A rays goes almost without saying; however, I emphasize it emphatically to both my students and especially to my pageant contestants. UV-B and UV-A rays have varied affects on your skin, your immune system, and your body as a whole. UV-B irradiation disrupts the melanocytes, causing them to release the redness known as sunburn. Any change in the color of your skin as a result of over-exposure to the sun is damage to your skin, even if your skin tends to tan as opposed to burn.

All changes in the color of your skin as a result of UV exposure is the melanocytes in your skin (the cells responsible for pigmentation) trying to tell you that normal, healthy cells have been severely disrupted. Have you ever left basketball outside in the hot summer sun for a lengthy period of time? And after you retrieved the ball, you immediately notice that the elasticity of the ball is weakened—it feels rubbery and never quite bounces back? This is exactly what happens to your skin as a result of prolonged UV exposure. Both UV-B and UV-A rays have cumulative effects and coupled together can lead to melanoma skin cancer.

In sum, if you must heed the need to be golden, opt for sunless tanning mousses. There are quality dermatologically-approved sunless tanning mousses available that are reasonably priced, and will give you evenly distributed color, but will do it without the harmful affects of UV-rays. Now you can have the best of both worlds— good looks and good health.br

Tea Tree Oil – A Natural Acne Treatment?

Category: Uncategorized @ 6:06 am

Author: Piers Valkindbr
Source: isnare.combr
br
If you suffer from acne, tea tree oil might sound like a good option for getting rid of it ? but does it work? Theres so much hype around natural treatments now that sometimes the truth gets buried for the sake of being environmentally friendly.

It might, or might not, depending. Before we get into that, though, let?s look at what tea tree oil is. It?s derived from a plant that?s native to Australia, called Melaleuca alternifolia. Originally, the leaves of the plant were used for tea, which is how it got its name. But the leaves themselves also contain oil and the extraction of that oil is what results in tea tree oil.

In Australia, it was soon discovered there are a multitude of uses for tea tree oil. The aborigines used the tea tree leaves for healing properties, and applied them to cuts and burns. But the leaves also contain a compound that works like an antiseptic, and that?s what is useful for acne. The was originally discovered by aborigines living near ponds where the tea tree leaves would gather in the water. They found that people who bathed in this water healed of cuts and infections far more quickly.

So, how useful is tea tree oil for getting rid of acne? Studies have shown that tea tree oil works well for acne, even better than benzoyl peroxide, which had more side effects and didn?t work quite as effectively. Many people report that benzoyl peroxide products make them itch and their skin feel like it?s burning and drying out, but they don?t have that problem with tea tree oil; natural treatments seem to have won this round!

Now, if you want to use tea tree oil on your skin, there are some things you should know before you start:

Don?t use tea tree oil in its undiluted state. Although you might think that will lead to more success in dealing with your acne, it won?t. When you put it directly on your skin, you might have some serious skin irritation that could include itching, redness and over drying. Pure essential oils are extremely potent and should be diluted with a base or carrier oil first. If you dont you could wind up with an unpleasant buring sensation on your skin.

Use a product that has about 5% tea tree oil. In studies, that amount is the best for skin. If you can?t find it commercially, you can make it yourself by mixing 5 parts tea tree oil to 95 parts water.

Some say you should only use tea tree oil if you have serious acne. Some people who only have mild acne (or just a few pimples here and there) say that their skin gets too dry if they use tea tree oil. You can always try using this product if you have tried other solutions that just havent worked.

Find a product that has other acne-fighting ingredients like witch hazel or benzoyl peroxide in it. Again, try a few things, because some products might irritate your skin more than others. Sometimes it simply is a case of trial and error?br

Tips For Teens, Taking Good Care Of Your Skin

Category: Uncategorized @ 6:05 am

Author: Julia Schwartzbr
Source: isnare.combr
br
Sometimes, when your older, you wish to go back to those teenage years. But we forget about the difficulties we had and teenagers these days still have. Just think about the physical changes you go through in that phase of your life. Its the time you become aware of your body and the way you and others look at it. It is also the time in your life that a lot skin troubles start to happen. Things like acne, blackheads and pimples start to show on the surface of your skin. You should take good care of your skin in this period of your life. Here are a few tips for teenage skin care, if only we had these when we were young.

Cosmetics, use with care

A lot of teens spend a great deal of their time using makeup. But teens should think twice before choosing a makeup product. They should make sure that non of these products, be it a foundation, blush-on, moisturizers or anything else had any oil content. Buy products from well known manufacturers. It would be a good thing if all the products you need and use are natural and organic. If a product is chemical based it can cause blemishes or pimples all over your face.

Squeezing is not the solution

Its an urban myth that squeezing the blemishes in your face help to solve the problem quicker. Squeezing the problem area will only make matters worse. When you squeeze or start picking the problem area you are at a higher risk of creating scar tissue and by doing so creating a problem for life. Youre better of when you leave the area alone and dont touch, pick, rub, scratch or squeeze your skin. Of all the teen skin care tips that are out there this is probably the most important one.

Always be gentle when cleansing

Somehow a lot of teens think that their skin will look better if they keep on cleaning the skin with a strong soap, this way taking out all the oil from that specific area. This is of course a wrong conclusion. What it does is make your skin loose moisture and that is something you dont want your skin to loose. This goes for all skin types, always be gentle. Always use a mild soap or cleanser to clean your skin.

Acne-prone skin? Avoid Scrubbing

If you are suffering from acne or know that you can easily get acne, stay far away from scrubbing products. Scrubbing your skin while you suffer from acne will only make matters worse. It could even damage the skin in such a way that it could leave scars for a long time if not for live. You should be looking at deep-pore cleansing products and clean your skin while gently applying it to your skin.

If possible use sunscreen cream or lotion

Teens spend a lot of their time outdoors so it would be only normal to apply a sunscreen lotion or cream to keep the skin from getting damaged by sunlight or environmental pollutants like smoke. The thing is that most teens dont think about it until they go to the beach or the swimming pool. Teens who suffer from acne and who are taking medications should be extra careful because one of the side effects is that these medications make you more vulnerable to sunburn. So, you should use sunscreen lotion or cream whenever you can. Sunscreen, not tanning lotion. All though tanning lotion can make the skin less oily it is not appropriate for teen skin care.br

Introduction And Definition Of Acne

Category: Uncategorized @ 6:00 am

Author: Kent Makrobr
Source: isnare.combr
br
In medical terminology, acne is known as Acne vulgaris. Generally this is not considered as life threatening condition as it never harms physically. The acne affects the teenagers the most but sometimes can be found on adults also. Acne affects both the gender equally. The peak age of getting the acne is 17-19 yr in males and 16-17 yr in females. Usually, acne gets healed themselves when one reaches the age of 23-28. One of the surveys says that 90% of the people dont require acne treatment except for any cosmetic reason as they heal automatically, but in some cases, the treatment is required for acne in their 30ies and 40ies.

One can define the acne as an inflammatory disease that involves the sebaceous glands, which are present under the skin. The appearance of acne is pustules or papules or comedones (black or white heads). The skin is marked by various red spots resulting from inflammation of sebaceous glands.

Symptoms of Acne

There are four steps in which signs and symptoms are seen. These are the steps in the form of changes in the skin and getting acne developed.

1. First and foremost is the changing of the normal skin to greasy or oily one.

2. Second change begins with increase in the sebum excretion, which is an oily secretion of the sebaceous glands. Normally this sebum comes out with perspiration and moistens the skin and thus, protects the skin.

3. Third stage is considered to be an important stage as in this, there will be formation of comedones that can be closed (white heads) or open (black heads).

4. This is the formation of papules or pustules or cyst from comedones. It is popularly known as pimple or acne.

There is no perfect place where acne can occur but generally the face, back, chest, neck buttocks are common site for acne.

Causes of Acne

There are innumerable causes of acne. If your skin is exposed to the harmful chemical then there are chances of getting acne. Pollens, dirt, excessive sebum secretion blocks the natural openings of the skin and this becomes the seat for microorganisms (especially bacteria). Bacteria gets accumulated and then later, produces the toxins, which irritates the skin locally finally giving rise to the skin. This inflamed condition is acne. Dairy hair and scalp with dandruff may also contribute to develop acne.

Usage of oil based cosmetics, stress, anxiety and insufficient sleep may also be triggering factor for acne.

Guidelines for Acne

Try to avoid milk products in excess. Cheese, nuts, fats, fried foods etc are to be avoided. You can apply ice cube wrapped in soft cotton cloth on the affected area. This will decrease the inflammation and hence will help healing in acne. Dont pinch your pimples. Certain latest techniques like accutane and laser treatment may help acne in great ways. Try to switch on herbal products instead of harmful chemical products. Never remain constipated and keep your pores open as much as possible. Try to avoid pollution and getting perspiration.br
