What Causes Acne? Three Primary Factors

You may currently be suffering with acne and want to find the most effective treatments for it. There are proven and effective treatments for acne which are simple, inexpensive, and natural. But I want to discuss the causes of acne so you can better understand what to do about it. If you dont know what is causing your problem, it will be much more difficult to address and ultimately correct it.

You may have been told that acne is caused by clogged pores or bacteria in your skin or perhaps by eating the wrong foods. These can increase the likelihood of acne or make the symptoms worse. However they are not the primary contributing factors towards developing acne. So what are they?

Acne is caused by three main factors. The first factor is an imbalance of your hormones. Hormones helps your body to communicate between its organs. Testosterone is a hormone which communicates with your sebum oil glands and has a direct impact on how much sebum oil these glands can produce at any time. Normally when your hormones are in balance, the sebum oil glands produce just the right amount of oil to keep your skin moist and elastic. However when the hormone level gets out of balance, it can cause your glands to produce too much sebum oil which tends to clog your pores and create pimples and blackheads.

We all know that teenagers go through significant hormonal changes and therefore tend to have big acne problems during this time. They all go through these hormonal imbalances as they mature. However why do some teenagers have excessive acne while others have very little?

This is impacted by the second factor which is toxic build up. Toxic build up is caused by the types of food we eat, the air we breathe, and the materials we may come into contact with. Our body tries to expel as much of these toxins as possible. However some are not expelled and may be stored in our tissues, blood, and lymph nodes.

These toxins can eventually merge with excess sebum oil secreted from our oil glands and cause bacteria to form and flourish on our skin. This combination creates acne, zits, pimples, blackheads, etc. with the inflammation and redness. And there are many products you can buy which advertise that they kill the acne bacteria. Most of them do. However the bacteria will continue to return as long as this combination of toxins and excess sebum oil exist.

At the same time you will find people who have hormonal imbalance (ie teenagers going through puberty) and also eat and drink all the wrong things but who still have very clear skin. How can this be?

Well the third factor plays a primary role here. That is genetic sensitivity of the sebum gland to hormonal imbalance. Some people are simply born with sebum glands which do not react very strongly to changes in hormone levels. Other people unfortunately are extremely sensitive to these kinds of changes and secrete excessive levels of sebum oil when things get out of balance. Therefore of all the factors discussed, this one plays the most significant role in how acne gets formed. Even if you have hormonal imbalance and have a lot of toxin build up in your system, as long as your oil glands dont react strongly to hormonal imbalances, you wont produce excessive sebum oil and will be fortunate enough to have very clear skin.

But for most of us who suffer with acne, we have sensitive oil glands. So to effectively treat our acne, we need to properly address the first two factors. That is we need to bring our hormones into balance and change our eating and lifestyle to reduce the toxins in our bodies. In this way, we can avoid overstimulating our oil glands into producing excessive sebum oil as well as reduce the toxins which otherwise create bacteria and acne. This can be done with safe, effective, and natural treatments. This will not only eliminate the problem now but keep it from coming back.

Factors That Contribute to Acne

Whats the worst thing that can occur to a teenager? Ask this question to teens, and the answer is common enough- acne. How does one develop acne, and how does one get rid of it? Acne has always been perceived as a stigma which may bring about social isolation and depression.

It has been theorized that acne may be caused by ones hormones- especially the male hormone called testosterone. This hormone is triggered during puberty, when large amounts of the hormone are distributed all over ones body. In women, acne can be triggered by hormonal imbalances as well, especially during menstruation.

Another theory states that the real culprit behind acne is stress, because it brings about a greater release of hormones in the adrenal glands. Sebaceous glands may further worsen the situation by acting as a secondary agent to hormones. In some people, the production of sebum can also lead to acne growth. When combined with skin bacterial growth, external rubbing, and dead skin cell shedding, the result is a bad acne breakout.

Some medications can also increase ones chances in developing acne. Such medications involve anabolic steroids, halogens, lithium, barbiturates, and androgens. Too much exposure to chlorine can lead to a severe acne condition called chloracne.

Over the years, many theories have been proposed regarding acne growth and development. The most famous among these tells that ones diet is a deciding factor when it comes to acne. There is even a common misconception wherein people equate oily foods as with having an oily face, and ultimately, more acne.

Science has proven that there is no relationship whatsoever between ones diet and ones acne problem. Teenagers should not be discouraged from eating food such as pizza, chocolates, and candy bars just because they have been said to contribute to acne. That is a myth which many people still believe in today.

Hygiene has also been pointed out as a deciding factor in acne. It is a common misconception that bad personal hygiene leads to more acne. In fact, too much cleaning and facial scrubbing can even worsen the acne problem. Products easily bought over the counter can also worsen acne rather than eradicate it.

The best solution to acne so far still lies in consulting with your doctor. As a health care professional, your doctor can give you sound advice on how to deal with your acne problem. And look at the bright side- for most people, old age means less acne.

Acne In Men

Acne, is an anytime uninvited guest in your life. Acne is not a term associated with women only. It is a ‘manly’ term as well. Men in all age groups carry the possibility of being affected by it. There are various types of acne that might find home on your body but in specific terms Acne Conglobata can attack men greatly. It is a severe form of acne and could really get hostile if not paid heed to.

Men, if suffering from acne on the face, need to take special care. Shaving could be a big problem for them. If you are facing the shaving blues while coping with acne, here are some tips that would make the process easier.

Shaving tips during breakout:

1. Wash your face before you start shaving. Use hot, soapy water and wash it carefully.
2. Apply shaving cream only on the areas that are pimple free and ready to shave.
3. Be careful and do not nick the blemish, because that can be painful and it could bleed and force you to wear a bandage strip all day.
4. Use a fresh, sharp disposable razor and carefully shave around the area.

Make sure you use a razor blade that is both sharp and clean. Most disposable razors can give about two to three shaving sessions before they become too blunt. Once the razor is blunt, throw it away and use a new one. Using a blunt razor can damage the skin and make outbreaks worse.

You will have patches of light or even heavy beard surrounding the outbreak area for some days, but don’t worry about the looks. It is surely better than drawing blood and creating a painful mess on your face.

On the other hand, many teenage young men find the electric shaver very helpful. Many find that by using an electric shaver they worry much less about pimples. In fact, unless the blemish is large and sore, you may be able to shave right over it with an electric razor without doing any harm. If you choose to go the electric shaver route, find a pre-shave lotion that will help the whiskers of your beard to stand up so that they can be shaved off easily. Many of these pre-shave lotions contain alcohol and that can both dry out the skin and be painful if applied to acne. Find a brand that has no alcohol, and if possible one that contains an antibacterial agent that can even help you fight acne. This does not mean that teenagers must use an electric razor. Many can successfully use a blade with little or no problems.

Acne can be well fought if precautions are taken. Moreover, there are a lot of treatment options available for you. And you can choose just the right one, which suits you. Remember, your being a man is not reason enough for acne not to attack you. So keep a check and be extra careful!
