We now know that this is not true. The food is not believed to play an important role in acne. It also has nothing to do with cleansing the skin. What is a fact is that acne in teenagers is caused by the action of hormones on sebaceous glands of the skin. During puberty, boys and girls have an increase in hormones called androgens. These hormones cause the sebaceous glands in the skin surface to enlarge. The sebaceous glands in response produce excess oil. This excess oil mixes with bacteria and dead skin on the surface of the skin and blocks pores. Inside these pores the bacteria multiple and cause inflammation. Most cases of light to moderate acne can be treated with prescription medications. There are many to choose from. Some people find that benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid works well. A dermatologist will consider many things before suggesting treatment. It will conduct a thorough evaluation of the patient, considering aspects such as acne severity, patient age, lifestyle and co-existing conditions. A dermatologist can suggest a combination of two or three different treatments for the best treatment. Whichever one of hundreds of treatments you decide to choose, or if you seek the help of a dermatologist, remember that acne takes time to disappear. Results miraculous overnight or do not occur. It takes six to eight weeks for the results of treatment. Unfortunately, in the life of a teenager in six to eight weeks can feel like a lifetime.
